Mr. Darrell Herron Receives Kentucky’s 2012 Civil Engineer Professional Recognition Award

Mr. Darrell Herron, PE, Senior Civil Engineer with Stantec Consulting Services, has received the 2012 Robert M. Gillim Professional Recognition Award presented by the Kentucky Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, which recognizes Mr. Herron for his service to civil engineering in the Commonwealth. 

Mr. Herron has over 30 years of experience in consulting engineering, and has developed specialized civil engineering experience in the area of landfill and ash impoundment design.  He assists clients in the power industry, as well as various state and local governments within Kentucky.  He is a licensed Professional Engineer in 8 states (including Kentucky).

Mr. Herron has served in all areas of ASCE leadership within Kentucky – including Bluegrass Branch offices in the 1980s, and Kentucky Section offices (he served as Kentucky Section President in 1995-1996).  He has served as a delegate representing Kentucky at ASCE Regional level as well – first on the former ASCE District 9 Council (from the 1990s into 2000s, what is now considered Region 4) and recently for the Region 4 Assembly of Delegates.  He served as Vice-Chair of ASCE District 9 Council in 2004-2005, where he continued to represent civil engineers from Kentucky and ASCE at the regional level.  He also serves as an auditor to the Kentucky Section ASCE, helping review the financial records and practices of the Section.

During his terms serving at ASCE Section level, he assisted in coordinating the ASCE Section Scholarship committee work in the 1990s, when significant growth and stability of the Scholarship fund was established.  The Scholarship fund continues today to award monetary awards to deserving undergraduate students involved in Civil Engineering and ASCE, at the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville, and Western Kentucky University.  He has been a long term supporter/advocate of the DV Terrell award, and currently serves as Co-chair of the D.V. Terrell Award Committee for ASCE Region 4/Kentucky Section.  He is a recipient of the outstanding Civil Engineer in Private Practice/Consulting awarded by ASCE Kentucky Section in 2004.

Significant Projects:

  • TVA Kingston Fossil Plant Facility Restoration – serving as technical advisor and lead civil engineer on portions of the perimeter dike stabilization and grading project at the TVA facility.

  • City of Manchester Landfill Closure – senior civil engineer responsible for design of landfill closure including leachate treatment, storm water controls, and slope stabilization.  Project won an ACEC-Kentucky Grand Award for innovative treatment system.

  • Cane Run Special Waste Landfill and Ash Disposal Facility – he oversaw the site-civil aspects of this project for the LG&E facility in Louisville, Kentucky, and continues to provide specialized civil engineering consulting services to client at the facility.

  • Freeman Lake Dam Reconstruction (Elizabethtown) – senior project engineer responsible for design of replacement concrete riser structure and hydraulic modeling and flood routing of the reconstructed dam.  Project won an ACEC-Kentucky Grand Award and was an ACEC Award National Semifinalist.
